Biking Around Mindoro | 25 Feb to 01 Mar 2015

Enjoying the shade...

Had a long break from work and decided to go on a bike tour around Mindoro!

Plan was to disembark at Abra de Ilog and make my way around the island until I reach either Calapan Port or Puerto Galera.

MY GPS ROUTES HERE...

  1. DAY 1 - Abra de Ilog to Mamburao
  2. DAY 2 - Mamburao to San Jose
  3. DAY 3 - San Jose to Roxas
  4. Day 4 - Roxas to Calapan

DAY 1 (25 Feb, Mamburao)
Experienced my first hiccup when I woke up late. Arrived at Cubao bus station around 7 am, and bus left for Batangas Pier at 8 am.
At Cubao

Inside the bus...here we go!

Arrived at Batangas around 10 am, and was lucky enough to arrive just in time to catch a ferry as it was about to leave port towards Abra de Ilog.

Touched down at Abra past 3 pm, and started pedaling my way south. It was already 5 pm when I reached my first major town in Mamburao, where I shacked up in some hotel there.

Touchdown Abra de Ilog
DAY 2 (26 Feb, San Jose)
Checked out of hotel at 5 am. Wanted to get as many kilometers as I could as early as possible before the sun sets in.
As the sun was rising...

By 12 noon, I was roughly halfway to San Jose and bouncing around along long stretches of unpaved roads.
Not all roads are smooth.

My bike held up pretty well, I'm happy to say. No tire punctures or broken spokes.

The sun was already setting by the time I reached San Jose. Got a room at Sikatuna Resort and got a much-needed rest and relaxation. I was going to need it since Day 3 turned out to be the most grueling leg of my ride.

DAY 3 (27 Feb, Roxas)
Day 3 was a bitch. Had to conquer a 3 km climb similar to Timberland, and the next 100 kms was a series of uphills while battling heat, hunger and fatigue.

But I have to say - the roads are awesome. Similar to the smooth roads I took during my Sierra Madre rides. One thought to take note of is that there are more vehicles on the road on the Oriental side of the island.

Was able to arrive at Roxas late afternoon and found a nice resort (Romulo's) with beach access, and I had ample time to recover from the day's exhausting ride.

DAY 4 (28 Feb, Calapan)

The ride to Calapan was pleasant. Mostly flat with moderate climbs here and there. I arrived at Calapan City mid-afternoon and I was tempted to take on the remaining 50 kms so I can do a proper Mindoro Loop and end my journey at Puerto Galera. But I decided against it since I wanted to spend a lot more time to just kick back, relax and soak in the island sun and sand. So I went over to Anahaw Resort and had fun!

The evening's entertainment...

DAY 5 (01 Mar)
Checked out of Anahaw at 12 noon, had lunch and pedaled the 5 kms to Calapan Pier. Again, my luck as I was able to catch a ferry just as it was about to leave port.

It was already 6 pm by the time I got off the bus at ugly, over-populated, dysfunctional, fucking Metro Manila.

So yeah. That's my weekend.
